Manuel Vicens (Cuba, active during the 19th century)
“Portrait of a Young Creole Lady”
Oil on canvas. Signed.
85,5 x 70 cm.
Elegant half-length female portrait depicting a young Creole lady seated and delicately holding a closed fan. The sitter gazes calmly toward the viewer, conveying a remarkable sense of intimacy and psychological refinement.
She is dressed in black attire of great sobriety and elegance, enriched with light geometric appliqués on the bodice, fine white lace at the collar and cuffs, and delicate openwork mittens. The ensemble is completed with discreet gold jewelry and an ornamental necklace, elements that emphasize her distinguished social standing. The artist demonstrates particular sensitivity in the rendering of textures — lace, fabrics, and transparencies — as well as in the delicate execution of the face and hands.
The composition fully belongs to the Hispano-Cuban academic portrait tradition of the second half of the 19th century, still influenced by Romantic and Isabeline models. The restrained chromatic range, dominated by velvety blacks and warm flesh tones, focuses all attention on the figure. The dark, neutral background reinforces the psychological presence of the sitter and enhances the quiet elegance of the scene.
Particularly noteworthy is the Creole identity of the sitter, a circumstance that lends the painting singular importance within the social and artistic context of the period. In the colonial Caribbean of the 19th century, it was uncommon for Creole women to be portrayed with the dignity, sophistication, and commanding presence traditionally reserved for the European aristocracy and upper bourgeoisie. For this very reason, the present work acquires special significance, presenting the young woman as a true society lady and reflecting both the cultural and economic rise of certain Creole circles and the growing desire for social representation among the Cuban elites of the period.
Although Manuel Vicens remains a little-documented painter in specialized art historical bibliography, his name appears in various Cuban philatelic and museum references. In 1973, the Cuban government issued a series of postage stamps dedicated to paintings preserved in the Museum of Santiago de Cuba, among which appeared a work by Manuel Vicens entitled Interior of the Residence of Don Juan Bautista Sagarra. The inclusion of his work in this philatelic issue confirms the institutional recognition of Vicens within the panorama of 19th-century Cuban art and demonstrates his connection to the colonial and bourgeois pictorial traditions of the island.
The present work fully participates in that cultural atmosphere, standing out for the quality of its execution and the restrained elegance of its representation.
Likewise, there is documented evidence of a religious painting by Manuel Vicens preserved in the church of Gibara, in the province of Holguín (Cuba). This information is particularly significant, as it confirms the artist’s activity both in the field of secular portraiture and in religious painting, thus broadening our understanding of his artistic production. Vicens’s connection with Gibara and with ecclesiastical commissions demonstrates his integration into the cultural and devotional circles of late colonial Cuba.
