Lot no. 290
[Manuscript]. [1st Empire]. [Guadeloupe]. Handwritten letter from Lieutenant BRIEN of the grenadiers of the 66th regiment, to Major General ERNOUF, Captain General of Guadeloupe, 1809 . 35 x 22 cm. 3 unnumbered leaves written in ink on r° and v°, one erasure with corrections, laid paper. This one relates the capture of Matouba, a mountainous region near Saint-Claude, and the fighting at the dwelling of Anglemont in Year 10 (1802) between the French troops of General RICHEPANCE and the black troops of Louis DELGRES and Joseph IGNACE "...the enemy was tumbled from all sides, some were killed, a large number were wounded, and the rest found their salvation in flight...". He recounts the explosion of the redoubt (28 May 1802) in which the two insurgent leaders and many of their men died. Sergeant BRIEN, who had stormed the redoubt with 15 men, was himself wounded in the explosion, which he almost prevented. "The explosion took place and I was taken away just as I was delivering a bayonet blow...". The letter is signed by several officers and bears the certification that it was sent by the Captain General of Guadeloupe to the Minister of the Navy and the Colonies in 1809, signed ERNOUF. Attached is a copy of this letter on laid paper, this one without erasures or corrections. Expert : Laurent Mirouze
