Lot no. 4
MANUSCRIT. [attributed to Pierre de Marcassus]. Extract from Homer's Iliads. Extract of the most remarkable things found in the Greek Poets and in their Scholiastes. 17th-18th c. One folio register (35 x 23 cm), sewn, unbound (or unbound?), without endpapers. 310 leaves. Entirely handwritten, in a neat and elegant script. It studies the Greek text of Homer in order to extract lessons relating to history, poetry, literature, etc., from it. This work must have been quite popular in the eighteenth century, as other copies can be found: BN, Coislin 182-183; Bibliothèque de Troyes, manuscript no. 445. The author of the text is generally considered to be Pierre de Marcassus (1584-1664), a writer from Gascony; his portrait was painted by Daniel du Monstier and engraved by Michel Lasne. Expert: Mr Roch de Coligny
