[ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT]. CHAMBRUN (Marie-Jeanne de). Poetry by Madame la comtesse Jeanne de Chambrun. S.l.n.d. [circa 1882]. In-8 of 30 ff. recto on vellum skin, jansenist red morocco, inner lace, burgundy moire lining and endpapers (Gruel). Superb illuminated manuscript on vellum. It includes an armorial title framed by caryatids and ten very fine paintings framing the first page of each piece, all carefully calligraphed: Venise, Pierre et Madelon, Pour un berceau, Au Mont Saint-Michel, Une branche de jacinthe rose, À une jeune fille, Mina, Le Bouton de rose, Hélios. These poems date from 1862 to 1881. This is followed by a dramatic three-character proverb entitled Il ne faut pas courir deux lièvres à la fois (ff. 18-29), the text of which is preceded by a full-page frontispiece depicting a hunting scene in sixteenth-century costumes. The text pages are framed with a large polychrome decoration for the poems, and a narrower one for the proverbs. Marie-Jeanne Godard-Desmarest (1827-1891), a wealthy heiress of the Baccarat crystal glassworks founded by her father, married Count Aldebert Pineton de Chambrun, MP for Lozère and philanthropist. At the end of the volume are proofs printed on hollande of the same pieces, enriched with numerous autograph corrections signed by the Countess de Chambrun. Joints worn, one corner a little crushed, title page slightly browned.
