Lot no. 62
[MANUSCRIT]. JOACHIM DE FLORE. [Vaticinia sive prophetiæ]. Preceded by: Vita dell'abbate Gioachino scritta da Gabriele Barrio franciscano. - And followed by: MALACHIE (Saint). Prophetia sancti Malachiæ Archiepiscopi Armachani totiusque Hiberniæ primatis... Seventeenth-century manuscript. Large in-8 of 13, 30 and XV pp, granite basane, smooth spine titled throughout, slipcase (Modern binding). Interesting and rare manuscript of the famous prophecies of the Cistercian monk Joachim de Flore, illustrated with 29 beautiful and very curious original pen-and-ink drawings, interpreted at the time from the copper engravings in the original edition of the Vaticinia sive prophetiæ, published in Venice in 1589. The drawing on p. 18 was not executed, although there is a corresponding engraving in the Venetian edition. In this manuscript, Joachim de Flore's prophecies, which occupy 30 pp., are preceded by a biography of the Sicilian prophet by the Calabrian humanist Gabriele Barrio, and commentaries on his first and fourth predictions, written in Italian by another hand, on 13 pp. These are followed by the text of St. Malachy's prophecy or prophecy of the popes, formerly attributed to Malachy of Armagh but now considered a 16th-century apocrypha. This last part, in XV pp., includes a list of popes and their mottoes from Celestine II to Alexander VII, elected in 1599. It features a full-page drawing of Pius IV's wheel, added later. From the libraries of Château d'Ham-sur-Heure, Belgium, with engraved bookplate dated 1912; Jean Storch, with bookplate engraved by P. Gandon; and Gonzague de Marliave (2019, no. 68). Original binding boards reapplied to a modern binding. Scattered foxing and stains, minor old repairs to first few leaves.
