Memorial allowing Algerian Jews expelled from Oran in 1669 to settle in Villefranche de Nice. This was the first settlement of North African Jews in what was to become French territory. An important manuscript document dating from 1669, which records the decisions taken by the King of Sardinia regarding a community of Jews expelled by the Spanish from the African town of Auran (today Oran in Algeria, at the time under Spanish rule) who arrived at the port of Villafranca di Nizza "desiderando di vivere sotto il dominio e protettione di V.A.R.". This request was granted by His Royal Highness, who wished to increase trade between Nice and Villafranca. The document analyses the most important points on which it was decided, in administrative, economic, religious and cultural terms, to guarantee the successful integration of African Jews into the local population. Negotiations were conducted with the Chief Rabbi of Oran, Abraham Cansino, author of the book Agudat Ezob, who later settled in Livorno.
