Lot no. 106
(MANUSCRIT). (ORLÉANS). REPORT ON THE GENERALITAT OF ORLÉANS. Drawn up by M. de Bouville, Intendant de lad. Généralité. S.l., 1699; manuscript in-folio (350 x 217mm), spotted calf, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons (period binding). 153 ff.
Precious inventory of the province of Orléans, drawn up at the end of the 17th century at the request of Louis XIV for the instruction of his grandson, the Duke of Burgundy.
It responds to a detailed questionnaire that the king had sent to each of the intendants and describes the natural resources (forests, rivers, etc.), the wealth of the soil (in this case mainly wine), the trade (in wine, wood, hides, etc.), the factories and crafts of each town, and provides an estimate of the income of the inhabitants, the ratio of tolls and rights of way as well as that of the many taxes and duties: gabelle (salt), tobacco, tax on silver crockery, aids, etc.
A handsome manuscript, elegantly calligraphed, in an attractive, fresh contemporary binding (small 5 mm. loss at upper head).
