[MANUSCRIT]. [Recueil relatif à la messe et aux devoirs du prêtre [Speculum compositum presbiterum Augustinum de dignitate sacerdotum]In Latin, decorated manuscript on parchmentNorthern Italy (?), circa 1450-1475 and additions circa 150064 ff, preceded and followed by a parchment flyleaf, rounded liturgical Gothic script, a second hand has copied the introductory texts (ff. 1-5), erased inscriptions on fol. 18v and fol. 64v, a third hand has copied ff. 20-22v (additions c. 1500?), headings in red, paragraph signs in blue or red, initials painted in red or blue, some with watermarked decoration.Hard parchment binding, smooth spine, a few stains. A few leaves with stained margins, a sign of intense use (traces of sustained reading). Dimensions: 110 x 70 mmThis manuscript was composed in an Augustinian context, perhaps by Canons Regular of Saint Augustine or a hermit of Saint Augustine (?), whose first heading refers to an "Augustinian priest". The presence of a prayer by Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan, reinforces the Augustinian origin of this collection. Similarly, the presence of a prayer attributed to Saint Anselm is explained by the links of Saint Anselm of Canterbury with the Augustinian order: Anselm of Canterbury was strongly influenced by Saint Augustine, applying to the letter the precept of Saint Augustine "faith that seeks understanding".After the introductory texts copied by another, near contemporary hand, the copyist inscribes the first heading: Speculum compositum presbiterum Augustinum de dignitate sacerdotum unde ita dicit [Work (Mirror) composed by an Augustinian priest on the dignity of the priesthood]; incipit, 'O veneranda sacerdotum dignitas in quorum manibus filius dei...'. Following headings: Actende qui celebrare vis; Quid cogitandum in missa; Devotio requiritur in missa celebratione; De utilitate celebrationis misse; Hec est figura huius sacri que describitur Exodi .xii. capitulo... ; Incipit corona Yhesu Christi ; Oratio sanctii Ambrosii episcopi ante missam didenda [Prayers of Saint Ambrose, bishop, before saying mass: Saint Ambrose of Milan was decisive in the conversion of Augustine of Hippo]. Several prayers follow. Other rubrics: In preparatione misse; Incipit officium sancte crucis [Office of the Holy Cross]; Incipit officium spiritus sancti [Office of the Holy Spirit]; Oratio sancti Anselmi; Devota salutatio corporis Christi editam a papa Johanne... A third hand has added thematic prayers for the dead (ff. 20-22v): "Pro uno defuncto"; "Pro defuncta femina"; "Pro pluribus defunctis"; The Order of Saint Augustine (Ordo Fratrum Eremitarum Sancti Augustini) was a mendicant order founded in 13th-century Italy.
