Lot no. 33
[MANUSCRIT] [Inventaire Général des différents fiefs, terres et seigneuries du comte de Coubert] S.l., 18th century. - 3 large folio volumes, 430 x 290. Tan calf, wide "Louvre" lace framing the covers, gilt fleur-de-lys at the corners, ornate ribbed spine, inner gilt border, speckled edges (period binding).Precious and imposing 18th century manuscript of more than 1400 pages, giving the "Inventaire général des différens fiefs, terres & seigneuries qui composent le comté de Coubert, appartenant à Messire Samuel Jacques Bernard Chevalier, comte du dit Coubert, Marquis de Longueil, Conseiller d'Etat and one of the doïens of the Maîtres des requêtes de l'Hôtel du Roi, Sur-Intendant de la Maison de la Reine, Grand Croix, Prévôt, et Maître des Cérémonie de l'Ordre Royal et Militaire de St Louis" (note attached).
Château de Coubert, which has now disappeared, was a seigneurial residence located in the commune of Coubert in Seine-et-Marne. Its history, marked by illustrious owners, reflects the major political and social upheavals from the Ancien Régime to the Revolution.
The estate originally belonged to the Duc de Vitry in the mid-seventeenth century, before passing into the hands of Marshal de Schomberg, who was forced into exile following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. At the beginning of the 18th century, banker Samuel Bernard, a major figure in finance under Louis XV, acquired the seigneury and had the château rebuilt between 1724 and 1727, adding pavilions inspired by those at Marly and an orangery, of which some remarkable remains remain today. Entitled Count of Coubert in 1729, he turned it into a residence of pleasure commensurate with his influence.
The château remained in the Bernard family until the Revolution, when it was confiscated as national property and finally destroyed during the Restoration. The last notable owners, the Potter family, kept the ruins until the mid-nineteenth century.
This manuscript, produced before 1750 at the request of Samuel-Jacques Bernard (1686-1753), provides a unique record of the lands and fiefs attached to the county of Coubert. In particular, it lists the seigneuries of Vitry, Mortry, Yebles, Nogent, Nesle, Lesplaine and Saint-Séverin. An entire volume is devoted to Vitry and Mortry.
Bindings in very poor condition, with missing parts, tears and spotting. Very good condition inside.
