Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863 - 1938) was an Italian poet of the fin de siècle, whose work is characterised by aestheticism and sensuality. He is regarded as the inspiration behind Italian fascism. The title of this poem, "Ditirambo", refers to a genre of ancient Greek choral poetry, the so-called dithyrambos, and thematically deals with the juxtaposition of the past and present in Rome and Tuscany, utilising a great deal of space for nostalgic transfiguration and rhetorical questions. It was first printed in 1903 as part of the 3rd volume of the 7-part series "Laudi del cielo, del mare, della terra e degli eroi". Signed manuscript by the Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio, dated 1902. Signs of age and use.
