This bronze ewer, depicting Andromeda chained to a rock in the middle of the sea and threatened by a sea monster, was one of a number produced by sculptor Marcel Debut for the decorative arts. From 1883 to 1914, he exhibited a number of objects inspired by mythology or allegories alongside statuettes at the Salon des Artistes Français. Marcel Debut explored the iconographic theme of Perseus and Andromeda on several occasions in the plaster, bronze and pewter vases he exhibited at the Salon between 1894 and 1899. This may be a cast from a decorative plaster vase entitled "Andromeda" that he exhibited at the Salon in 1894.
