Marcel Duchamp (Blainville 1887 - Neuilly sur Seine 1968) Georges Hugnet (Paris 1906 - Saint Martin de Ré 1974) Urinal, 1938-1939 Miniature urinal in white ceramic enhanced with black paint in a red velvet slipcase made by Georges Hugnet. Signed and dated by Marcel Duchamp: "R. Mutt 1917" on the right-hand side. Fontaine's miniatures were produced in 1938-1939; this example was probably intended for one of the boxes in the first edition (series A, 1941-1949) or the second edition (series B, 1941-1954). 23×20×7cm Exhibition: - Tokyo "Dali Picasso Chagall", Tokyo, Art Gallery, 8 - 20 September 1978 - Paris "Pérégrinations de Georges Hugnet", the catalogue of the 1978 exhibition at the Centre Pompidou. No. 172 is mentioned as follows: "Marcel Duchamp. "Fountain. Miniature replica of the urinal entitled Fountain (1917), from Marcel Duchamp's "boîte-en-valise" (1938) and presented by Georges Hugnet in a velvet box-frame. - Sdhdr: R Mutt / 1917".
