The clear sky, the white-tinted cherry tree in the background and the peaceful sheep all around add a touch of softness to this rural tableau. Martine is not distracted by the proximity of the animals. The little donkey, his head resting affectionately on her shoulder, is watching her read her mail, while Patapouf, who would clearly rather be enjoying himself, is attracted by his mistress's straw hat.
