MARCHEBEUS. Journey from Paris to Constantinople by steamship. New itinerary. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, Amiot, l'auteur, 1839. Large in-8, black half-chagrin, spine decorated, spotted edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this logbook relating the first voyage by steam liner on the Mediterranean.
The illustrations consist of a map and 24 city views based on drawings by the author.
The voyage of the François Ier, which left Naples in April 1833, had already been reported by Giraudeau in 1835. Little is known about Marchebeus, who described himself as an architect, soldier and traveller.
Book partially unstuck, head cover and upper hinge worn, rare foxing.
