Lot no. 94
MARIA CASPAR-FILSER* (Riedlingen 1878 - 1968 Brannenburg) Roman landscape, 1912 lithograph/paper 16,5 x 21,2 cm signed Maria Caspar-Filser ESTIMATE °€ 50 - € 100 STARTING PRICE € 50 Maria Caspar-Filser was a German painter. She was one of the founding members of the New Munich Secession and was influenced by Impressionism and Expressionism. Because her father, the district administrator Josef Filser, was repeatedly transferred, she grew up in various places in the Kingdom of Württemberg. Maria Filser studied at the art academies in Stuttgart and Munich from 1896 to 1903/1904. Her first solo exhibition took place in 1905. In 1907, she married the painter Karl Caspar. The couple lived for a time in Munich, Balingen, and Gottlieben (TG), but from 1909 onwards they lived exclusively in Munich. In 1909, Maria Caspar-Filser became a member of the German Artists' Association. In 1913, she was the only woman among the founding members of the New Munich Secession (MNS). In 1925, she was the first German female painter to be appointed professor; she taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1923 she took part in the International Art Exhibition in Rome and between 1924 and 1928 exhibited three times at the Venice Biennale. In 1927, she was elected to the board of the German Artists' Association. The Caspars often spent their summer holidays in Hödingen, where they were visited by Paul Renner, Fritz Spannagel, and Maria Gundrum. In 1936, the paintings and prints they influenced were removed from an exhibition at the Neue Pinakothek as "degenerate," and in 1937, eight of their works were confiscated from public collections as part of the "Entartete Kunst" (degenerate art) campaign. The couple subsequently retired to their holiday home in Brannenburg. In 1948, Caspar-Filser again participated in the Venice Biennale. In 1950, she was one of the founding members of the Deutscher Künstlerbund (German Artists' Association); she participated in its first annual exhibition in Berlin in 1951 with three oil paintings. In the same year, she became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Maria Caspar-Filser is the recipient of numerous national and international awards. In 2013, a retrospective at the Hohenkarpfen Art Museum and Ochsenhausen Monastery rescued Caspar-Filser's art from oblivion. In 2016, she was featured in the exhibition "Einfühlung und Abstraktion. Die Moderne der Frauen in Deutschland" (Empathy and Abstraction: The Modernism of Women in Germany) at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld. Further artists and styles: Interior, Oil painting, Still life, Tempera, Landscape, Flowers PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights.
