The artist is mentioned as a teacher at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City (founded in 1781), and as having been a pupil of Miguel Cabrera (1695-1768). The iconography of the Virgin as a shepherdess, wearing a straw hat and looking after her flock, invented in Seville in the circle of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682), became very popular throughout Latin America in the 18th century. Here, our painter takes up the interpretation given by his master Miguel Cabrera, for example in his small copper in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (circa 1760, inv. M.2008.31).
