Marie BASHKIRTSEFF (1858-1884). Autograph manuscript, [1882] 1 page large in-8. Rare page from her Diary. This page was cut out of a notebook; the beginning and end of the text are missing. In this note, dated 7 February 1882, Marie Bashkirtseff reacts to an article by Wolff devoted to Louise Breslau. "I invent dresses for her art, I dream of draped bodices, of revenge. I don't mean to say that I would have her talent if I did what she did; she follows her natural style, I follow mine. But my arms are cut off. - I feel so powerless that I want to give it up forever. Julian would say that I would do the same if I wanted to. To want to! But in order to want, you have to be able to. Those who succeed with I want are unwittingly supported by secret forces that threaten me. And to think that at times I not only have faith in my future talent, but that I feel the sacred fire of genius! O sadness!!! At least here it's nobody's fault, that's less encouraging. There's nothing as terrible as thinking that if it wasn't for this one or that one I might have got it. And the fever since [...]". Attached are 3 documents from Nice Town Hall (death certificate, exhumation certificate; a l.a.s. from Raymond [de Toulouse-Lautrec?] about the Babanine family (1960); photographs of paintings and press cuttings.
