Marie BRACQUEMOND (Landunvez, 1840 - Sèvres, 1916)
Au soleil, le pique-nique champêtre', study
Black pencil and eraser, set to tile
Unframed
32.0 x 43.5 cm
This fine charcoal drawing is one of a series of preparatory drawings for the illustrations of the twelve months of the year produced around 1882 by Marie Bracquemond for La Vie Moderne, a weekly illustrated magazine of art and literature that had just been founded in Paris in 1879. The subject, imbued with a certain impressionist poetry reminiscent of Manet and Monet's famous Déjeuner sur l'herbe, could illustrate springtime, a time of first lovemaking in the open air.
