Our portrait was painted during the Directoire period. After 1795, Mademoiselle Capet and Madame Labille "ci-devant Guiard" returned to Paris and had to win back a clientele. With the help of accommodation in the Louvre, artists, scholars and lawyers were more consensual and less politically-motivated than their clients of the 1780s. As is often the case, the artist painted a large portrait of his model (here in oil) and a miniature. The latter portrait (fig. 1) belonged to the Clore collection and was presented at public auction in 19861.
1 - The Clore Collection of portrait miniatures (Part I), London, Sotheby's, 17 March 1986, Marie-Gabrielle Capet, Portrait d'un cartographe, diameter 8.5 cm, sold for £50,600, a record at the time for a French miniature.
