Lot no. 13
Marie-Geneviève BOULIARD (1762-1825) "Self-portrait with a book in front of a landscape". Original canvas. H. 34 x W. 30.5 cm. Signed on the back M Bouliard peint par elle meme l'an 1794. (Old restorations) Note: An only child from a wealthy background, Marie Geneviève Bouliard trained as a painter in the studio of Joseph Siffred Duplessis, and was one of the few women admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and therefore allowed to exhibit her work at the Salons. She was very prolific during the revolutionary period and made a name for herself among the portrait painters of her time. Marie Geneviève Bouliard followed in the footsteps opened up by Madame Vigée Le Brun to women artists at the end of the 18th century. Although little is known about her life, we do know that her work was well received by the critics, and she was awarded the Prix d'Encouragement at the Salon of 1791. Unknown to this day, our self-portrait is an important addition to the body of her work. EXPERT: Cabinet TURQUIN, Mr Stéphane PINTA.
