Amsterdam, David Mortier, 1718-1719. 2 volumes in one in-4, grained calf, spine ornate, spotted edges (Binding of the period). Very rare first French edition of a Dutch work published by Carel Allard under the title Algemeene en verbeterde hollantsche Scheepsbouw. The first volume deals with the construction of warships; it is divided into two parts. The second volume has its own title page dated 1718; its title is Les Pavillons ou bannières que la plupart des nations arborent en mer. The illustrations include 34 figures in the text and 22 plates of ships outside the text, sometimes folding, in the first volume and 90 plates of flags included in the pagination in the second volume. Spine rebound (original boards reapplied), endpapers renewed, discreet repairs to verso of some plates, scattered foxing and stains. Without the title page of the second part of the first volume.
