Marion BOEHM Forbidden fruit, 2017 Mixed media on paper Signed and dated lower right "MARION BOEHM 2017". 165 x 118 cm Mixed media on paper; signed and dates lower right "MARION BOEHM 2017". 64,96 x 46,46 in. Provenance: ARTCO Gallery, Berlin Acquired directly from the gallery by the current owner FR Born in 1964 in Duisburg, Germany, Marion Boehm travelled the world between 1984 and 1993 to discover new cultures, religions and ways of life. In 2010, she decided to settle in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she teaches art at a children's school and travels to the township of Soweto, which has had a major influence on her work. South African artist Kay Hassan became her mentor and introduced her to a private community project in Kliptown, which led Marion Boehm to begin her artistic career creating unique collages. Marion Boehm focuses on the genre of portraiture, whether life-size, imagined or from a photograph. Practising the collage technique, the artist plays with the superimposition of textiles, coloured fabrics, jewellery, beads and patterns, creating countless details to discover and inviting the viewer deeper into the narrative of the work. Her technique is also representative of her collection of materials from all over the world: Europe, Asia, Africa and from different eras and cultures. In this work, Forbidden fruit, the artist superimposes textiles from traditional African clothing and a carpet knitted in Germany in the 1950s. In this way, she creates an interweaving of cultures, repositioning each story in a new context. This superimposition of stories and cultures is reinforced by the use of printed texts. These texts, which are statements, whether personal or taken from poems, are visible as watermarks on the faces of her characters. The text is repeated, decoding the intention of the work while leaving room for self-reflection and the viewer's own interpretation.
