PPS3351 It was thanks to his "Gloria Victis" ("Glory to the Conquered") that Antonin Mercié won the medal of honour at the Salon of 1874. The original work was commissioned by the City of Paris after the artist purchased the plaster cast at the 1873 Salon, which he produced at the Villa Medici in 1871. The group depicts the winged, armoured Renommée supporting a dead and defeated soldier, as indicated by his broken sword. She personifies France, defeated but heroic after the traumatic Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Cast in bronze by Thiébaut Frères, the statue was placed in Montholon Square in Paris before being conserved in the Petit Palais museum in Paris. The subject was a huge success because of its patriotic symbolism.
