Morocco, dated 7 April 1796 Exegesis of the Qur'an, Tafsir al-Jalalayn by al-Mahalli and al-Suyuti, copied for the son of ibn Suda al-Tawudi. Arabic manuscript on paper in Maghribi script, 21 lines per page in Maghribi script in black, red and blue ink within a double red frame. Sarlowh on the first page and intermediate illuminated sarlowh. Marginal comments. Colophon dated Thursday 29 Ramadan 1210 (7 April 1796), indicating that the manuscript was copied by Muhammad al-Ghayyib(?) b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Sulayman for his Sheikh Abu'l-'Abbas Ahmad b. Sayyid al-Tawudi b. Suda. Bound in red leather with flap and cover, with stamped and gilt decoration of a central mandorla. Size: 20.5 x 16 cm LS Worm holes, flap detached, many pages restored, not collated, wetness. Provenance: Si Dris Laraki, Fez, Morocco, purchased on 8 May 1918; Galerie Paul Prouté, Paris. The Tafsir al-Jalalayn is one of the most important tafsir for the study of the Qur'an. It was written by two authors named Jalal (Jalalayn), Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH/1459) and his pupil Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH/1505). This manuscript was copied for the son of the famous scholar ibn Suda al-Tawudi (1700-1795), one of the most politically and intellectually influential people in Morocco. Sheikh Abu'l-'Abbas Ahmad b. Sayyid al-Tawudi b. Suda was the chief qadi of Fez. He died in 1235H./1819-20 and is buried next to his father in his father's religious complex (zawiya).
