Lot no. 18
MARRA (Giorgio). I Trionfi di S. Giorgio martire. Rome, Ignatio de' Lazari, 1661. Small in-8, brown morocco, double framed with lobed gilt fillets at the corners, gilt fans and fleurons at the spandrels, central medallion with fan containing an angel's iron in the centre, smooth spine grotesquely decorated, gilt edges (Italian binding of the period). A very rare popular edition of these two plays - Il Trionfo del Drago and Il Trionfo del Martitio - linked to the cult of Saint George in Calabria (the author was originally from Cosenza). It is decorated with two woodcuts showing the saint slaying the dragon (repeated on p. 81) and the cross of Saint George. The USTC lists only three copies of this edition, all of which are preserved in Italy. Charming Italian fan binding. Engraved bookplate with the arms of the Count of Provence, who became king under the name of Louis XVIII (1755-1824). Minor damage to headpieces and one corner worn, endpapers renewed, light spotting.
