MARTEN RIJCKAERT (Antwerp, 1587 - 1631) Mountainous landscape with pilgrims Oil on panel, 38.7X57.5 cm Provenance: Paris, Galerie De Jonckheere, 1980 (as Marten Rijckaert) Paris, Segoura Gallery, 1982 Genoa, private collection Exhibitions: Paris, Paris Biennial, 1982 (as Marten Rijckaert) Bibliography: https://rkd.nl/explore/images/273812 (as Marten Rijckaert in the style of Joos de Momper II) Trained in his father's workshop, Marten Rijckaert continued his apprenticeship with Tobias Verhaecht, a traditionally educated but multifaceted artist, by virtue of a stay in Italy. It was indeed Verhaecht who persuaded the young artist to undertake the educational trip to our peninsula and, having arrived in Rome in 1607, he probably collaborated with Paul Bril, devoting himself to landscape painting. However, scrolling through his production, the influence of Italian art is particularly noticeable in the portraits, while in the landscape genre we see him sticking to the Nordic tradition. This tenor is well perceived in the panel presented here, whose archaic nature is close to Verhaecht's compositions and Joos de Momper's manner, suggesting an early date of execution and likely preceding the trip to Italy.
