MASSIVE INDUS VALLEY TERRACOTTA JAR WITH BIRDS AND MONKEYS.
Ca. 2500 - 2200 BC
A terracotta jar with a squat, rounded body rising from a small flat base to a broad, circular mouth. The exterior is decorated in dark painted slip with a principal frieze of monkeys and birds within a zone of dotted and linear symbols. Further bands of decoration encircle the shoulder and lower body, including registers of linked ovals and diamonds, between multiple horizontal lines.

Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly in a Swiss private collection formed in the 1990s.
