MASSIVE INDUS VALLEY TERRACOTTA VESSEL WITH BULLS, MONKEYS AND FISH.
Ca. 2500 - 2200 BC
A terracotta vessel with a tall slightly waisted cylindrical body on a spreading base, the exterior decorated in dark painted slip with a principal lower register of humped bulls set between stylised trees, above this a central zone of three narrow bands with small ibex in procession separated by hatched bands, the upper body with a register of elongated monkeys with crosshatched bodies flanking stylised peepal trees and, on the neck, a frieze with fish.
Size: 420mm x 200mm; Weight: 3.6kg.
Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Germany; formerly in a Swiss private collection formed in the 1990s.
