Lot no. 2
Master Alejo (Master de la Calzada) (active in Palencia, first decades of the 16th century) Saint Francis of Assisi Oil on panel. 55 x 32,5 cm. Magnificent oil painting on panel with a Franciscan saint on a lustre-painted background with flowers and gilding, as if he were his own halo of sanctity. St. Francis of Assisi gazes up to heaven, from where he never took his gaze, in continuous prayer from which he never left, with the visible reflection of God's requited Love in his wounds and stigmata. He receives "the signs of that Love" in his hands, feet and side. This panel by the Master Alexius is a primordial work from the first quarter of the 16th century, notable for its artistic style, simple, masterly composition and use of colour over gilding. It clearly shows elegance, refinement of lines, soft, flowing lines that create delicate contours against the gold background, and details of miniature finesse. A human figure full of naturalness and beauty, a face full of serenity and devotion. It features warm, earthy tones against the gold, creating an exquisite mystical atmosphere, conveying a sense of calm and spirituality, and reflecting the influence of Italian Gothic painting of the period. The talent and spirituality of the Maestro de la Calzada are reflected in this panel. With the certificate from Ms. Isabel Mateo dated January 2016.
