In seinem plastischen Werk setzt sich Ewald Mataré vor allem mit dem Wesen der Tiere auseinander. Dabei geht es ihm nicht um die Wiedergabe von Charakteristika, sondern immer um das Beispielhafte und Ursprüngliche, das bis in das Mythische reicht. In der Konzentration auf das Wesentliche gibt Mataré mit tiefem Einfühlungsvermögen die Schönheit und Erhabenheit der Tiere in reduzierten Formen wieder, ohne dass er den Bezug zum Naturentwurf negiert. Auf diese Weise entwickelt er eine ganz eigene Auffassung von der im realen Raum "lebenden" Plastik, die sich auf die Rundum-Ansicht und Abtastbarkeit sowie auf die geschlossene Form und Materialgerechtigkeit gründet. In his sculptures Ewald Mataré especially deals with the nature of animals. Here, he does not want to portray characteristics but always the exemplifying and originating which reaches to the mythological. By concentrating on the most essencial, Mataré displays the beauty and dignity with deep empathy and reduced shapes. Though, he does not negate the reference to nature. This way he creates his own perception of "living" sculptures in the real space which he founds in the onidirectional view and abstraction as well as the closed form and the use of materials.
