Georges Mathieu is the originator and the most important representative of Tachism, a movement of the Informel in abstract painting. In 1947, together with Camille Bryen, Georges Mathieu organised an exhibition in Paris on what he called the "Non-Figuration psychique" school of Tachism.
Mathieu's works are mostly non-figurative compositions determined by the speed of the painting process. His works are created in an emotional, intuitive act of painting following the method of Japanese calligraphy which is characterised by meditation, concentration, improvisation and speed. Mathieu's paintings were downright mise-en-scènes as he painted his large-scaled works in front of audiences. He cultivated this kind of theatric painting actions in a way that in 1956 the artist created a 4 x 12 metres painting from 800 paint tubes in half an hour in front of 2000 spectators in the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt. He thus ascribes a special importance to the creative process of works of art. In 1959 Georges Mathieu participated in the documenta II in Kassel.
The present painting shows white and scattered green calligraphy-like series of at times narrowly at times generously swung lines on a vibrant, black and pink ground. Here Mathieu created a colour composition in an almost musical and conducting manner.
