Mai (Hg.): Das Kabinett des Sammlers, Köln 1993, S. 183 - 184. Diese kleine Holztafel zeichnet sich durch ihre nahsichtige Kompositionsdichte und ihre kunstvolle Doppelbeleuchtung aus. Eine brennende Kerze in der Mitte erhellt die dicht beieinander gedrängten Gesichter und ein Öllämpchen im Rücken die Wand mit der Signatur des Künstlers. Das Bild gehört stilistisch noch zu den Frühwerken Naiveus, in denen der Einfluss der Leidener Feinmaler noch deutlich nachwirkt. Charakteristisch ist dabei der nahsichtige Bildausschnitt und das illusionistische Spiel mit der künstlichen Lichtquelle, wie sie auch von Godfried Schalcken kultiviert wurde. Nach Dou, Slingelandt und Schalcken steht Naiveau für die Spätzeit der niederländischen Genremalerei an der Schwelle zum 18. Jahrhundert. Matthijs Naiveu The Holy Family Oil on panel. 20 x 17.2 cm. A lit candle in the centre of the work illuminates the crowded faces, and an oil lamp lights up the wall and reveals the artist's signature. The work's style allows it to be allocated to the artist's early period, which was marked by the influence of the “Fijnschilder” of the Leiden School. The choice of a close-up perspective and the illusionistic play of artificial light - inspired by the work of Godfried Schlacken - are typical of this phase. Alongside Dou, Slingelandt, and Schlacken, Naiveu is among the most emblematic representatives of late Netherlandish genre painting.
