Lot no. 176
MAUNDRELL (Henry). A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem at Easter, A.D. 1697. The Fourth Edition. Oxford, printed at the Theater, 1721. In-8, spotted calf, large plain calf frame bordered with cold fillets with fleurons at the corners and a fine roulette around the central rectangle, ribbed spine, spotted edges (English binding of the period). Fourth enlarged edition, including 15 engraved plates, 8 of them folding.
Henry Maundrell (1665-1701) was chaplain in Syria for the Levant Company from 1696 to 1701. His travel account, which has become a classic, contains "the first description of Baalbek by an Englishman" (cat. Blackmer). It was first published in Oxford in 1703.
A pleasant copy, with a few handwritten annotations in the margins and on the endpapers.
Two spines split, some rare foxing.
Blackmer, n°1096 (5th ed.) - Hage Chahine, n°3098.
