"My General, I did not want the Express to appear before you had read my reaction to your conference at the Continental. I hope it will not hurt you and that you will feel my respectful and faithful admiration. But we are endeavouring to communicate to our young audience what seems obvious to us: that the return of the current majority in 1956 would precipitate French decadence. Not everything will be saved if we win, and the regime will remain what it is - but not the men - and you are an example of what a man can do. I repeat to you our confidence in you, the need we have for you, the certainty that your future can be as great as your past"... At the top, de Gaulle wrote: "I have answered".
