Lot no. 5
Maurice de Vlaminck, 1876 Paris – 1958 Ruell-la-GadelièreDORFPLATZ, UM 1918 - 1919 Öl auf Leinwand. 73 x 92 cm. Rechts unten signiert. † (1100063) (10) Maurice de Vlaminck, 1876 Paris – 1958 Ruell-la-Gadelière VILLAGE SQUARE, ca. 1918 - 1919 Oil on canvas. 73 x 92 cm. Signed lower right. The painting offered for sale in this lot shows a vista of a tranquil village with heavy, deep forest-green clouds towering above it – either conveying the atmosphere of a looming storm or showing a nocturnal ambience. Vlaminck skilfully and intriguingly juxtaposes the still and almost deserted village centre with just one carriage and pedestrian with the dynamic depiction of a row of houses towards the right picture margin in extreme perspective foreshortening and a road taking a sharp turn to the left. This contrast is further emphasized by the dark, looming sky painted in quick brushstrokes towering above the village, painted in a carefully set colour scheme. The Belgian artist's participation at The Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1905 caused controversy and together with André Derain (1869-1954), Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) he co-founded Fauvism. As is typical for this artistic movement, shades of green and ochre are juxtaposed in this painting. †
