Lot no. 48
Maurice de Vlaminck (Paris, 1876 - Rueil-la-Gadelière, 1958) 'Tournant Dangereux' Numbered copy 103 of 275. Printed on Vélin d'Arches paper. Consists of 6 original lithographs, lettering and ornamentation by Vlaminck. Printed by Coulouma, engravings by Mme. Duchatel, Paris. Edited by Librairie Stock Delamain et Boutelleau. Paris, 1930. 29 x 23 cm.   To talk about Maurice de Vlaminck, we must go back to the 1905 Salon d'Automne in Paris, where our artist, together with Matisse, Derain, Manguin, Duffy, and others, shocked Parisian critics, who labeled this innovative group of painters as true savages: “Les Fauves.”   Our artist in particular, 'more than any other member of the Fauvists, he identified with the attribute of wildness and propagated the image of a modern artist rebel who had resolutely turned his back on the rulebook of the academies' This is stated by the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, which dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him called “Maurice de Vlaminck: Modern Art Rebel” between September 2024 and January 2025; the same exhibition was dedicated to him by the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal between February and May 2025. But Vlaminck did not devote himself exclusively to painting. During his long artistic career, he played the violin—like his father, a professional violinist—and wrote poetry, erotic novels, and a dozen autobiographical volumes, including the book we are auctioning. His work is held by major museums such as the Musée d'Orsay, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Tate Museum in London, and, among others, the Art Institute of Chicago, which in fact holds a copy of “Tournant dangereux” (inv. 2014.571).   Reference bibliography: - Museum Barberini.
