Galerie Nathan, 16 march - 19 junde, no. 16 (verso with the label). “I feel the nature in which I am immersed much more intensely through the forms I discover, than through the universe in which I live.” – Maurice Estève Often lauded for his colours, the creative colour of the light in the work of the French artist Maurice Estève is dependent on the form which results from the oscillating, hierarchical arrangement of the pictorial space. Estève’s path was founded on Cubism and Léger’s unambiguous formal language. Estève succeeded in developing from figurative art to abstraction without losing the formal language which was so crucial to him. It is hardly surprising then, that in this transformation, the artist was guided by no less than Cézanne and Fouquet, for whom a richness of colour and simultaneously strict pictorial composition are inseparable. The synthesis of form and colour is also in evidence in the work presented here, Calcarone, one of 23 oil paintings, which were all produced between 1970 and 1980. Estèves Weg gründet im Kubismus und der eindeutigen Formensprache Légers. Die Entfaltung der figürlichen Darstellung zur Abstraktion gelingt Estève ohne den Verlust der für ihn so entscheidenden Formensprache. Kaum wundern lässt also, dass sich der Künstler für diese Transformation an keinen geringeren als Cézanne und Fouquet orientiert, für welche der Reichtum an Farbe und ein gleichzeitig strenger Bildaufbau untrennbar sind. Die Synthese von Form und Farbe zeigt sich ebenso im dargestellten Werk Calcarone, eins von 23 Ölbildern, die alle zwischen 1970 und 1980 entstanden sind.
