Max Bergmann (1884 Fürstenberg a. d. Oder - 1955 Haimhausen)
Young farmhand with two horses at the watering trough
Bergmann's work is characteristic in terms of motif and style; he favoured depicting rural motifs, animals and farm work. Bergmann initially studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg from 1902 to 1906. In 1906 he continued his studies at the Academy in Munich, where he became a master student of Heinrich von Zügel in 1907. The latter influenced him in the broad, impressionistic treatment of his landscapes and animal motifs. From 1910 onwards, Bergmann's works were exhibited almost every year at the Glaspalast in Munich. In 1912, Bergmann moved to Haimhausen, where a small artists' colony had formed and where he founded a private painting school in 1925. As Bergmann's art corresponded to the "blood and soil" ideology, he was able to take part in the National Socialist propaganda show "Great German Art Exhibition" from 1937-1944 with 19 works, three of which were acquired by Adolf Hitler.
