Werner Spies, Sigrid et Günter Metken, Max Ernst. Werke 1939-1953, Houston, Menil Foundation; Köln, DuMont Buchverlag, 1987, n° 2398, rep. p. 50.
Fancies of real validity in childhood have been discarded for experiences of adult life, but in a hidden corner of Ernst's mind they have been preserved and have reached an unearthly maturity of their own. It is as if Alice were to grow up in Wonderland while you yourself became a stock broker, and you were to meet her one day, to re-discover her enchantment, now filled with love and terror. Max Ernst became her guardian when you had forgotten her. His hair has always been prematurely an exeptional bleu-grey and his eyes have always been young. He burns like the filament of an old fashioned incandescent light. He plays like a child at being grown up, at having a complicated intellect, at being diabolic. He is the oldest innocent. He is rapid and instinctive as a bird and pretends to hate birds…
