At an early age he became a member of the artist group "Die Brücke", whose main goal was the renewal of German art. Pechstein developed a powerful expressionism characterised by the intense, colourful treatment of figures and landscapes. He served as a soldier in the First World War, which made his imagery darker and more thoughtful. In the 1920s, Pechstein lived mainly in Berlin and Berlin-Dahlem, was internationally recognised and exhibited in many European cities. The National Socialists declared it "degenerate art" in 1937 and many works were removed from museums. After the Second World War, Pechstein took part in several important exhibitions and worked as a teacher at the university in Berlin-Weißensee. In addition to painting, his work also includes graphics and ceramics. Pechstein died in Berlin in 1955. His art is characterised by expressive colouring, dynamic compositions and a combination of personal emotionality with folk and archaic elements.
