Albertina, Weiler 341 numbered 289/360 ESTIMATE € 1600 - € 2600 STARTING PRICE € 1600 Max Weiler attended the Toni Kirchmayr painting school in Innsbruck and from 1930 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Karl Sterrer, where he was accepted into the masterclass in 1933. In 1936, Clemens Holzmeister commissioned him to work on the artistic design of the Austrian Chapel in the papal pavilion at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. During the Second World War, Weiler initially worked as an assistant teacher in Telfs and in Zams near Landeck, before being called up by the German Wehrmacht in 1942 to serve in Northern Italy and Yugoslavia. He returned to Gerlos in 1945 and won the competition to paint the frescoes in the Theresienkirche on the Hungerburg in Innsbruck. In 1951, he celebrated his first solo exhibitions at the Tyrolean Provincial Museum Ferdinandeum, the Würthle Gallery in Vienna and the New Gallery of the City of Linz. In 1964, he was appointed professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1975, the first monograph on Max Weiler was published, edited by Wilfried Skreiner. In 1978, a Weiler exhibition took place in the Graphic Collection of the Albertina in Vienna. This was followed by numerous other exhibitions in Austria and abroad.
