Médaille en or en l'honneur du Major General Alexander Macomb (1782-1841) remise par le Président des Etats-Unis à la demande du Congrès, ,produite par la United States mint, commémorant son action lors de la bataille de Plattsburgh le 11 septembre 1814. ,L'avers représente le buste du Major General Alexander Macomb vêtu de son uniforme militaire. ,Le revers représente une vue de la bataille de Plattsburgh avec les troupes traversant la rivière Saranac au 1er plan, puis les fortifications avec la ville de Plattsburgh en flamme, et enfin sur la gauche la bataille navale en cours, diam: 6,4 cm, 248g Héros militaire américain, nommé Commandant Général de l'armée des États-Unis, il a été acclamé "The Hero of Plattsburgh" après la victoire renversante de la bataille de Plattsburgh. Né le 3 avril 1782, fils d'un brillant militaire, il commença sa carrière dans les Rangers de New York en 1798. Diplômé de l'Académie militaire en 1802, il fut promu successivement Capitaine, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Adjudant Général, Brigadier, puis Major Général en 1819, et Commandant Général des armées en 1828. Ces brevets portent les signatures d'illustres Président tels que George Washington, Thomas Jefferson...Grand esprit et fin stratège, Alexander Macomb fut l'auteur en 1840 d'un ouvrage intitulé «The Practice of Court Martial ,», avant de mourir en 1841. Lors de la bataille de Plattsburgh, le 11 septembre 1814, grâce à ses compétences de commandant sur le terrain et à l'ingéniosité de sa manoeuvre, le Général Macomb a retardé l'invasion britannique jusqu'à la victoire du lac Champlain. Cette bataille est l'une des plus impressionnantes de l'histoire américaine. En effet, seuls 3400 hommes étaient engagés pour vaincre les forces anglaises adverses, soit plus de 11'000 hommes. Le Général, fin stratège, utilisa la tactique militaire dite des « ,abatis ,», faisant abattre des arbres occultant des tranchées pour tenir les Britanniques à distance. En remerciement pour ses services, le Président, par la résolution du Congrès du 3 novembre 1814, a remis au Major Général Macomb une médaille en or unique commémorant cette bataille. La dite résolution disait ainsi « ,Resolutions, expressive of the sense of Congress, of the gallantry and good conduct with which the reputation of the arms of the United States has been sustained by the Major Général Macomb. ,». La médaille lui a ainsi été remise en 1815 par le Président des Etats-Unis James Madison. ,On joint à la médaille une lettre manuscrite issue du Département de la Guerre datée du 26 mai 1815 et signée par le secrétaire à la Guerre, Alexander J. Dallas (1759-1817). Cette lettre annonce au Général Macomb la résolution du Congrès le concernant et la remise de la médaille en or par le Président des Etats-Unis. Le Major Général Alexander Macomb reste encore aujourd'hui une figure importante de l'histoire américaine. Une ville a ainsi été baptisée en son nom dès 1830. De nombreuses rues ou monuments attestent de l'importance du Major Général Macomb, notamment sa statue en bronze à Detroit et son monument funéraire au cimetière du Congrès à Washington. Provenance ,: descendante directe, Susan Watts Macomb (1849-1928). En effet, la petite-fille du Major Général Macomb, Susan Watts Macomb épousa Frédéric Sears Ier Grand d'Hauteville. La médaille est restée dès lors dans la famille jusqu'à ce jour. Born on April 3, 1782, son a military great, he started his career with the New York Rangers in 1798. Graduating from the Military Academy in 1802, he was promoted successively to Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Adjudant general, Brigadier, Major General in 1819 and then General-in-chief of the Army in 1828.  , ,The certificates of appointment bear the signatures of Presidents such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.  ,Great mind and astute strategist, Alexander Macomb was the author of "The Practice of Courts Martial" ,published in 1840 before his death in 1841.At the Battle of Plattsburgh on September 11 1814, General Macomb fought off the British invasion. Using his knowledge of the land and with ingenious manoeuvres, the enemy was held off until the victory at Lake Champlain. This battle is one of the most impressive in American history. Only 3,400 troops were deployed against 11,000 of the British allied forces. Being a great strategist, the General employed a manoeuvre known as abatis which involves knocking down trees to form a barrier and create a fortification. This was very skilfully executed hence the British numbers diminished rapidly. In recognition for his services, the President awarded Major General Macomb with a unique gold medal by the resolution of Congress on November 3, 1814 which commemorated this battle.  ,The resolution stated Resolutions, expressive of the sense of Congress, of the gallantry and good conduct with which the reputation of the arms of the United States has been sustained by the Major General Macomb. The medal was officially awarded to him in 1815 by President of the United States, James Madison.  , Along with the medal is a handwritten letter issued by the United States Department of War dated May 26, 1815 and signed by War secretary Alexander J. Dallas (1759-1817). This letter informs General Macomb of the resolution of Congress and his being awarded a gold medal by the President of the United States. Major General Alexander Macomb remains an important figure in American history. A town founded in 1830 was also named after him, Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. Road names and monuments also pay tribute to Major General Macomb as well as his bronze statue in Detroit and funerary monument at the Congress of Washington. Provenance: by direct descent, Susan Watts Macomb (1849-1928). The grand-daughter of Major General Macomb, Susan Watts Macomb married Frederic Sears I Grand d'Hauteville. The medal has remained in the family to the present day.
