Edition decorated with the famous frontispiece depicting a public dissection, the engraved portrait after Titian which is often missing, figures in the text and 82 hors-texte engravings by Jan Wandelaar, based on the xylographs of the De humani corporis fabrica, first published in 1543. This remarkable publication was produced with the help of two great eighteenth-century scholars, Hermann Boerhaave and Bernhard Albinus. . In addition to the frontispiece and the portrait, the many depictions of skeletons against a landscape background, which seem to be endowed with feelings, are much appreciated. Several handwritten ex libris to the left of the title. The binding is decorated on both covers with a large gilt iron depicting Athena with her attributes: armour, helmet, spear, owl, shield and at the foot, Hagae Comitis, for the city of The Hague. Some rubbing, scratches and tears to boards, one hinge split over 4.5 cm, corners dulled, gilding on boards slightly missing. Internally: volume I is in fine condition, with negligible defects and free of foxing, light angular spotting on pl; 65-66-67. Some browned quires in volume 2 or rare and light marginal wetness. Overall, a good copy.
