Lot no. 348
MEDIEVAL TWO-HANDED KNIGHTS SWORD Ca. AD 1400 - 1600. A very rare and impressive medieval knights sword with a central fuller, simple crossguard, and octagonal pommel. The blade features silver inlay on both sides of the blade in the form of heraldic symbols within a shield, a lion rampant on one side and an eagle displayed on the other. The blade is 1220mm long and 53mm wide at the ricasso, whilst the fuller extends 324mm up the blade. The pommel is engraved on each side with a cross pattée. The excellent balance and relatively low weight of this sword means that it was highly likely to have been intended for use in combat. For similar see: The Rijksmuseum, Object Number NG-NM-522. Size: L:1620mm / W:320mm ; 3kg. Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; formerly in a private German collection, acquired on the German art market in the 1990s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
