Medicine - Ophthalmology Boerhaave, Hermann Praelectiones publicae de morbis oculorum. In hac secunda editione addita est Dissertatio anatomica de tunica oculi choroidea. Joannis Sigismundus Leincker. 2 parts in 1 volume. With 2 folded. Copper plates. Venice, Bortoli, 1752. 240 pages, XVI, 87 pages, paperback with paper spine label (slightly stained). 2nd enlarged vernez. Edition. - Boerhaave's only work on ophthalmology, here in the second, expanded Venetian edition. - Hirschberg 332 - Lindeboom 399 - Waller 1223 - Wellcome II, 191 - This influential textbook, based on a series of public lectures from 1708, contains information on the lacrimal canals and glands, the retina and cornea, amaurosis, ophthalmia, conjunctivitis, night blindness, myopia, presbyopia and hallucinations. It was particularly important for the dissemination of new ideas about the nature and location of cataracts as advocated by Brisseau (1631-1717) and Maître Jean (1650-1730), ideas that were supported by Boerhaave's own observations. Two chapters describe the use of ophthalmological instruments, and the 22 engraved illustrations show the functioning of the eye with defective vision and with corrected vision. - This edition also contains a dissertation by Johann Siegmund Leincker (1724-1788) in which he describes the nature and function of the choroid. It also contains a lot of general information about the eyeball and various eye diseases. - Becker 53: "Boerhaave, considered the father of the modern method of clinical instruction, had a world-wide reputation as a physician and teacher and his lectures and writings exerted an enormous influence on the practice of medicine in the eighteenth century. He was the first to describe accurately the muscular fibres in the ciliary body, but his greatest contribution to ophthalmology was in the broad dissemination which he gave to the revolutionary doctrine of Maître-Jan and Brisseau on the true nature of cataract." - Front endpaper with owner's note and trimmed approx. 1 cm in the upper margin, the first and last pages slightly browned or brownstained, otherwise clean and tidy inside.
