Lot no. 78
MEIBOM (Marcus). Antiquæ musicæ auctores septem græce et latine. Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier, 1652. 2 volumes in one small in-4, stiff vellum, smooth spine, mottled edges (period binding). Rare and sought-after first edition of this reference work on ancient music theory.
It is attributable to the Danish scholar Marcus Meibom, who compiled the Greek text of seven treatises on harmony and music theory - by Aristoxenus, Cleonides (attributed to Euclid), Nicomachus of Gerasus, Alypius, Gaudentius, Bacchius the Elder and Aristippus Quintilian - and published it with a juxtaposed Latin translation and numerous annotations.
The work contains five folding plates, mostly printed in red and black.
A pleasant copy of this "highly esteemed collection, which is difficult to find" (Willems). Marginal repairs to a few leaves, some foxing.
Willems, n°1148.
