Lot no. 692
Meissen cachepot with miner's decoration and rare depiction of "Underground"
Bulbous, quatrefoil body with flaring rim on a moulded round base. Laterally extended handles with cartouche-shaped base. Depictions of the life of Saxon miners on both sides of the wall. On the front a cut scene of three miners working underground in a mine, above a landscape with a hut village. Motif of a standing miner on the reverse. Scattered scattered flowers all round. Polychrome painting with gold staffage. Centreboard mark. H. 16 cm. Mouth d. 16 cm.
Miner motifs "Underground" are rarely found on Meissen porcelain. The depiction illustrates a mine in cross-section with an open pit. A coffee pot with a similar scene can be found in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg (inv. no. 1908, 166 a).
