MENESTRIER (Claude-François). HISTOIRE CIVILE ET CONSULAIRE DE LA VILLE DE LYON... with a map of the city about 2 centuries ago. Lyon, J.B. and Nicolas de Ville, 1696. In folio of [26]-42-548-64-136-[8] pages, blond calf, boards decorated in the Du Seuil style, very ornate ribbed spine, gilt lace, gilt edges (L. Magnin). The Histoire civile ou consulaire de la ville de Lyon presents the first critical history of Lyon in which everything is reconsidered on the basis of material remains: ruins, inscriptions and coins, images of which are integrated into the text, as well as manuscript documents (registers, contracts, memoirs, privileges) transcribed in an appendix called the Preuves de l'histoire. (Expo. BM de Lyon, un jésuite lyonnais, Ménestrier. 2005). The illustrations include a very large folded map of Lyon, 6 plates (4 folded) including the famous clock plate which is often missing, and numerous engravings and woodcuts in the text. Restorations to the plan without missing, light foxing and stains on the boards. Beautiful binding by Lucien Magnin, bookbinder from Lyon (1849-1903).
