With the 170 S Model Mercedes made its come-back on the luxury cars market. The 170 S was introduced at the May 1949 Hanover Technical Export Fair alongside the 170 D. It was a great step forward despite the fact that it was based upon the pre-1940 W 153 running gear. Like Alfa Romeo with the 6C-2500 and in view of sparing a lot of development time the two great marques started again their production with pre-1940 models using slightly improved separate chassis. Compared to the 170 V of the Thirties which was produced again in 1947, the 1949 170 S benefitted of a more powerful engine, a new front axle and a wider body. Alongside the saloon, Daimler-Benz offered a 2-door 2-seat Cabriolet A and a 4-seat Cabriolet B. At the time, the Cabriolet A was a luxury top-of-the-range model. In addition to the production cars, some chassis were fitted with special coachwork made outside the factory body-shop, for instance a radio station-wagon built by Binz for the police and a six-seat patrol car with foldable soft top. Following some modifications the 170 S was resignated W 191 by the factory from January 1952 onwards. Both types of cabriolet were no longer produced after November 1951.
This car had been fully restored from the chassis. Red finish with beige interior, carpets and seats and red piping. Cream hood and white steering wheel. The woodwork is superb. The car has Bosch headlamps, a Telefunken radio receiver and two special suitcases in the boot.
