At the first Frankfurt International Motor Show in April 1951, Daimler-Benz proudly unveiled the 220 and 300 models both fitted with OHC six-cylinder engines. Besides its modern 2.2-litre 80-bhp engine, the 220 was based upon the 170 S which was itself affiliated to the pre-1939 170 V. The x-shaped chassis frame and the body were similar to the 170 S ones except the headlamps now set in the front wings. To cope with higher speed and weight, the brakes were of the "Duplex" type.
The 220 was launched into production at Summer 1951 and like the 170 V it was offered with three body types : saloon, cabriolet A and cabriolet B. These last two open versions aimed at the sporting cars market and soon replaced the same 170 S types which were phased out of production in November 1951. Besides these body variants, 41 cars were built for the police between August 1952 and May 1953. These car had 4 doors and a soft top without stays.
The 220 was also available in chassis form. In October 1952, 8 cars received an ambulance body and between October 1952 and July 1954 more than thirty 220 chassis were bodied by Binz as radio-cars for the police.
In November 1953 the flat windscreen gave way to a slightly curved one. From December 1953 following requests "from prominent customers" a coupé version was designed and made available from May 1954. A low-production and very expensive car, it remained the rarest 220. Technically the coupé was based upon the cabriolet A and from April 1954 both models received the 85-bhp engine developed for the 220 A.
The saloon was phased out in May 1954. The production of the cabriolet B had ceased at Sindelfingen one year before. The coupé and the cabriolet A were produced until July and August 1955.
The example in the Rolf Meyer Collection had been restored from the chassis. Black finish with bordeaux red hood and carpets and brand new leather upholstery. Some details are noticeable: a folding rear seat, beautiful woodwork in rosewood and a Becker Mexico radio receiver. This magnificent car has clocked 21 160 miles (33 858 km).
